____

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend a free screening of the movie Juno in Washington DC. It is a quirky movie directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) about a 16 year-old girl who becomes pregnant [preview below]. Although, at times the humor felt a little forced, this was a very enjoyable movie to watch, that I highly recommend you go see when it releases in December. If you are in a big city, it is possible that Fox Searchlight is offering several free screenings before then, so you may want to check that out HERE.

The soundtrack for Juno was carefully selected, and played a big part in the movie. Given that you most likely haven’t seen the film yet, it’s not all that important to go into how the music was woven into the film, but I am going to share the soundtrack list plus samples with you, because the music was fantastic.

In the official trailer, one of the songs you hear is Anyone Else But You by The Moldy Peaches, and you will hear it several times within the film[listen below]. It almost feels like this movie was written as a picture book for this song, as both are obscure and spark a very similar feeling. If you love this song, you will probably love this movie. If you like this song, you will probably like this movie. If you hate this song, get off this site right now.

Ellen Page, the pregnant girl Juno in the film, is credited for giving the film the sound that is has. Peter Sciretta, over at /Film spoke with the director Jason Reitman, who states:

“At one point, I asked Ellen Page before we started shooting, ‘what do you think Juno listens to?’ And she said ‘The Moldy Peaches’. She went on my computer, played the songs, and I fell in love with it. Diablo and I discussed putting a Moldy Peaches song in it where the characters would sing to each other. I got in touch with Kimya Dawson of The Moldy Peaches and she started sending me her work, which was beautiful, and that became a lot of the soundtrack.”

Again, thanks to /Film, here is the soundtrack (with some mp3 samples) to the movie:

I dunno its just like habit now. After finding about some of my favorite bands here ie (Sea wolf, jeremy messersmith, and a few others) not to mention we share a favorite band Wilco. I’m just prone to check this site to see if you’ve posted any new bands.

not to spam.. but I left my email if you want to send me an email sometime, there are a few bands that I listen to that I was wondering if you’d heard of namely bowerbirds, sparklehorse, merz and a few others.

  13. Joosh on 27 Nov 2007 at 3:02 pm

Hey Does anybody know what is the first song in this movie, during the intro/credits

    chord progression goes G, C, G, D, G

    Thanks to any help

  14. Billy Katz on 28 Nov 2007 at 11:55 pm

    Hi Joosh —

I honestly don’t remember if this was the first song, but there is a piece in the film with those chords — played in a rapid picking pattern — that was in the original trailer, and appears in the movie during that “sped up” scene, where Juno is describing a certain “type” (goth, cello-playing, etc). Believe it or not, I am the guitarist playing those chords .

I was hired by the film’s composer, Matt Messina (he goes by “Mateo” now), with whom I’ve worked on many projects before. That four-chord progression was actually one of the first cues we recorded together. Since the arpeggiating is beyond my technical ability, we recorded it at half-speed to keep it fluid (then pitch-shifted it back to its correct octave).

Here’s an interview with Matt, where he speaks a bit about our collaboration:

    http://seattlest.com/2007/11/02/seattlest_inter_11.php

    Awesome movie, by the way!

  15. Billy Katz on 29 Nov 2007 at 12:03 am

Oops! Perhaps if I hadn’t been so caught up with “blowing my own horn”, I would have figured out what song Joosh WAS referring to! It’s the first song on the Juno soundtrack, and it’s called “All I Want Is You”, by Barry Louis Polisar.

    Sorry for the misinformation, Joosh!

  16. Billy Katz on 29 Nov 2007 at 12:06 am

Aaggh! Okay, last correction. I think it may actually have been Kimya Dawson performing “Rollercoaster”. Too many songs with those four chords! It was definitely either Kimya or Barry.

    I’ll stop now…

  17. Floria on 29 Nov 2007 at 3:11 pm

Thank you for posting the soundtrack. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I loved the movie – saw it at a Maryland screening last night. The Moldy Peaches song is perfect for those two!

  18. Indi on 04 Dec 2007 at 4:46 pm

The movie is very nice. Quite funny and great soundtrack. Would definitely recommend it.

  19. Anne on 04 Dec 2007 at 11:24 pm

I saw the preview a little while ago and I heard the intro and I was like, “I know that song. I have that song. What is that song?” and then in class the next morning I scared the crap out of my friends when I yelled, “I like Giants! Oh my god Kimya Dawson!” and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. Yup. That’s my story.

Damn I want to see this.

  20. Milo on 07 Dec 2007 at 1:50 am

Hey Billy, I have been looking for the song that is purely instrumental and plays when Juno is describing her real mom, dad and step mom. It was also the background music for the Juno website before they added the whole soundtrack. What is the chord progression on that? I love that sound.

  21. that girl. on 07 Dec 2007 at 9:25 am

    I loved it. :]

  24. Billy Katz on 10 Dec 2007 at 1:36 am

Milo, I wish I could help, but I’m afraid I don’t know which piece you’re referring to. Could you describe it a bit more specifically? Were there any instruments besides acoustic guitar? Was it the finger-picking segment I described in my earlier post?

By the way, did you know the digital (i.e., online; i.e., iTunes) version of the soundtrack comes out Tuesday (12/11)? Pretty exciting!

Jacob – reading through your comments, a few names stuck out at me. I seen the Bowerbirds in concert a few weeks ago when they opened for the Mountain Goats. I really loved the fact that the woman played the accordian! My friend yelled “Mama’s got a squeeze box!”….aside from that Wilco also played back in September. I live near Columbia, MO, and surprisingly we get some decent bands. Can’t wait to see this film. Hope it’s all that it’s cracked up to be.

  29. Lynn on 22 Dec 2007 at 3:00 pm

Yeah – I loved this movie too. The music was great with the rotoscope animation in the tiles. At the end when she and Bleeker are singing. Has anyone put Mott the Hoople in a movie before? Everyone associated with this film should get any award they would be in line to receive. The writer is brillant and the direction was excellant. I can not say enough good stuff about this film.

Anyone who listens to the blasphomy that this band (i can’t even call this a band!) and likes it needs some serious help and I hope I never encounter any of you because you’re from another world where everyone likes crap and everything from The Moldy Peaches is CRAP!!! I’m putting this nicely! THE MOLDY PEACHES SUCK BIG DONKEY BALLS!!!

  101. hi. on 21 Jan 2008 at 9:58 pm

okay this is to the bone who obviously does not like the music on this page:

try proofreading your comment before you insult everyone who has posted their opinion. you spelled blasphemy wrong. and it makes no sense in that context. also when you put a parenthesis clause in, you are supposed to continue the sentence as if it were not there. which you clearly did not do because “….blasphemy that is this band….and likes it….”does not make the slightest sense either. so take that into consideration the next time you criticize something almost everyone who posted before you liked.

and ps. the next time you insult something try to refrain from using blasphemy and sucking donkey balls in the same paragraph.

Does anyone know the song where Juno is riding her bike and it says something like, “I like to be outside and he likes to be inside…” That’s all I remember! Thanks.

  105. Sandra on 24 Jan 2008 at 2:46 pm

I loved this movie, Juno’s situation was very similar to mine, I got pregnant at 16 and the part were she’s braking the news to her parents made me cry because it was the same way I broke it to my parents minus the best friend and the cool reaction form the parents. And then when she mentions her due date as May 4th that is the day my son born. that part made me cry too.

  110. are you all just stupid on 29 Jan 2008 at 8:29 pm

listen, “hi” that guy using incorrect grammar dosnt change the fact that this music sucks. “the monkey on your back is the latest trend..” what the hell! this music is terrible, all the songs in this movie made me sick, i could hardly stand it. As i said before, people actually left the theater (during the opening) because it was just that bad. and im not even talking about the movie right now… the movie itself was an opinionated self contradicting pile of shit. heres an example…

Anti abortion girl: small, lovable, intelligent, asian girl.
Clinic receptionist: death obsessed, somewhat scary, goth chick

i wonder what the directors stance on abortion is????

    people claim the movie was..”REAL”

    this basicly happened

    “mom dad…im pregant”
“oh thats okay honey, we will need to prepare though”

    yeah…thats REAL!

    “honest to the blog”
“im talking on a hamburger phone”

    you think thats funny!?!?

    LOLZ A HAMBURGER!!!!

    the director is an idiot..

    “i asked ellen paige”

“what kind of music do you think juno listens to??”

BUT SHE TALKS ABOUT THE MUSIC SHE LIKES IN THE MOVIE, WE ALREADY KNOW! SHE LIKES THESE SLIGHTLY HEAVY BANDS. NOT “my sweet honey bee” BULLSHIT!

“Juno is a quick witted intelligent…….”

yeah..shes intelligent getting pregnant at 16…thats really smart.

this was a chick flick version of napolean dynamite, that used forced humor.

    ID ALSO LIKE TO ADD

    INDIE MUSIC??!?!?!

    independent music.

Hollywood sponsorship is not independent. you are contradicting yourselfs.

Juno was the worst movie i have watched, I have always given actors credit for their work, even if the part was bad they still manage to bring a bit of personality to the screen. I cannot say this about juno.

the very fact that people disagree with me..makes me sick.

this is not music, this is not real, this is not funny, this is not witty, this is not inspiring.

    this is filth.

    >>>INDIE MUSIC??!?!?!

    >>>Hollywood sponsorship is not independent. you are contradicting yourselfs.

Think about it – half of these songs – such as Belle and Sebastian’s Expections, have been around for years. If it was indie music when it was released, being in a film at a later date doesn’t change that.

It’s not like they wrote all the songs especially so they could be in Juno.
Some of the music was a bit.. insipid at times, however.

  116. true on 12 Feb 2008 at 3:35 pm

but the music still sucked. hard.

Incredible movie. I would buy it just for the soundtrack.

  118. crotch_monger on 22 Feb 2008 at 4:40 pm

I agree with most on this site that the movie was great. Even though you can find your fix for quirky movies far more easily and consistently in the foreign films section of your local rental store, this was a much needed departure from the typical shit one can expect from hollywood, that is marketed to young adults. However, having gotten that out of the way, I was really only motivated to post after having heard the soundtrack the entire way through. (It took me three tries to get through the whole thing.)

This soundtrack is a collection of some of the most contrived, sub-standard hooliganism (yes, it’s a word and aptly fit here) that I have witnessed in my young life and I go to a state university with a THRIVING hipster scene. I believe I can narrow it down for you all, as I am not trying to say that every song on this movie is shit. Far from it. It’s a specific breed and it goes by the name of The Moldy Peaches, among others.

The reason that I am so offended by this music and why I call it contrived is because it seeks pass itself as quirky and backward, when its really not. These are just rehashed folk songs, only this time, they have been recorded poorly (on purpose, mind you) and sung slightly of key and with a non-chalant, perfectly struck “aww, shucks” grin. This is WORSE than Lenny Kravitz calling for a “love revolution.” Why? Because I know people are actually buying this shit, on purpose.

  119. crotch_monger on 22 Feb 2008 at 4:44 pm

Please excuse my type errors in the above post when posting any rebuttals. I realize the irony of bashing someone, when you yourself are not in perfect form, but it’s early guys.

oh my god… whats the point of coming onto a forum just to piss people off. If you did’nt like the movie dont think about it… dont be psycotic assholes who obsess over hate.
Im not into indie music but as a first time listener i think its not so bad. I liked it as it made the movie… it wasn’t repeatedly heard music like every other movies’ soundtrack and the one liners made the movie what it is… not a long rehearsed paragraph.
Its different and that’s what i like about it… I would definately recommend (cant remember how to spell this, maybe its right) this movie to people who want something different from the usual crap that hollywood produces…

  128. I hate moldy fruit on 22 Apr 2008 at 6:33 pm

The movie was pretentious indy crap.

I’m all for independent movies, but that movie was so full of itself, I almost walked out. All of the hype was dumb, the script wasn’t unbe-fuckin-lievable, and It would have been decent if the self loving actors/director-writer chick didn’t decide to shove it in your face as if it were Oscar-winning, flawless cinematic gold that could cure cancer and AIDS. It was so pretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentiouspretentious
pretentious. So was the shit-soundtrack. Independent films are jokes now.

  131. Anonymous on 16 Jul 2008 at 12:43 pm

It had a silly story line but they pulled it off. But still, I must admit, most of the music couldn’t even have been called music (Cat Power is awesome though). There are still many other great indie films out there, such as Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine.

  132. honestly though on 25 Jul 2008 at 11:19 am

    Three points remain valid.

    1. The movie was unrealistic:

The reactions of the parents friends and peers was simply- not there

Not one person owned a cell phone or electronic device.

She went through about 2 stages of pregnancy.

    2. People DID leave the theater because of the music:

Although I have no real proof, im sure some others witnessed that happening.

    3. “Thunder cats are go” or “honest to the blog” are thrown into the movie.
And thats simply not funny. (forced humor aswell)

I will admit, putting a movie together is HARD getting a good soundtrack is EXTREMELY HARD. And i respect the fact that these two things were done.

But i know that it could’ve been done better, mainly due to the fact that.

    There were good actors.

And the movie was directed by a man who has other succeses.

Juno in my opinon is a lost opportunity. With Bad music.

[…] new catchphrases a la Amy Heckerling (think Clueless), but overall, worth a viewing. Not to mention the soundtrack is awesome, plus there are some obscure-o movie and music […]

Juno MacGuff is a sarcastic, cynical, tomboyish teen played by Ellen Page in a fantastic, perfectly tuned performance. After sort-of-spontaneous (but not really) sex with her best friend, Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera of ‘Superbad’), Juno receives an unwanted package–a pregnancy. Woops.

Juno decides to give her baby to an affluent couple, Mark and Vanessa Loring (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner). All seems well at first, but it will be a bumpy road until birth.

I can spend hours gushing about how terrific a movie ‘Juno’ is, but I’m not really the greatest writer on the planet, so I’ll just express the fact that ‘Juno’ has a strange effect on you. After seeing it, I almost felt as if I would walk out of the theater and see Juno MacGuff just standing there, as if she were a regular living, breathing teenager. That’s how good Page is. In fact, every single performance in the film is absolutely tremendous. I liked how Allison Janney’s stepmom character isn’t turned into a whiny she-demon like most formula stepmoms, instead, she’s far more friendlier (if a little unsure of Juno’s odd ways) than we would ever expect. And J.K. Simmons finally gets a role where he isn’t a total jerk; instead, he’s a sensitive father who truly cares for his wacky daughter.

The soundtrack is awesome, I’ll be buying it as soon as possible. The wait for the DVD will be truly agonizing, but worth it in the end. We can see the chain reactions here when a group of truly ambitious individuals (such as Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody, and Ellen Page) get together and make a movie such as this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.

I give ‘Juno’ my highest recommendation possible.

    Sweeeeet, man.
